Family Fun Food Trail

With the top-rated beach in the country, Woolacombe is packed with things to do as a family and this trail will ensure you explore some of the best local food the village has to offer. All child friendly and in walking distance of the beach, we’ve listed an array of places. From a full English Breakfast, to homemade clotted-cream fudge, to an authentic Sri Lankan curry on the beach, there’s something for everyone in this lively seaside village.

Start the day with pancakes at GJ’s Dutch Pancake Bar on South Street. Open from 10am in the summer, the kids will love these authentic Dutch pancakes and the variety of fillings available.

Or drop into Bar Electric for a cooked breakfast. As well as serving a full English they offer breakfast burritos and mini breakfast options for the kids. Or try The Captain’s Table for a pre-surf breakfast. They also do take-out sandwiches.

Woolacombe has plenty of options for lunch with the family. The Red Barn is in a prime location for watching the surf and serves a good selection of child-friendly options. In the heart of the village is the Jube pub. This is a more formal dining experience compared to The Red Barn, but still caters well for children.

Fancy something sweet? Pop in for some homemade fudge or an ice cream at Fudgies Bakehouse. They do a mean pasty too.

For dinner, Barricane Beach Café’s unique location sets it out from the rest. When combined with an authentic Sri Lankan curry served on china plates sitting on the beach, it becomes something really special. This is only available in the summer as the tiny hut has to be craned off the beach in the autumn due to the high tides. Come early as they regularly sell out. If the kids are not into spicy food, they also serve paninis, jacket potatoes and rolls.

If you are staying on one of the nearby campsites why not walk along the Esplanade and up the hill to the pretty village of Mortehoe?

Conveniently located next to each other, you can choose a fabulous quality fresh fish and chip takeaway or a platter of fresh lobster, crab and prawns from Mor Shellfish T Eat or order one of the homemade, hearty dishes at the Rockleigh Takeaway next door. Their Thai Fish Curry is a firm favourite with the locals followed by ginger pudding – if you can manage it!
